blacksmith CDV photo

1860's ID'd CDV Occupational Photo
of a California Farrier or Blacksmith

This is a wonderful identified Civil War era CDV photograph of a California Gold Rush era Farrier or Blacksmith. A farrier is a specialist who makes horseshoes, and the portable stand would be appropriate for field work. Handwritten on the back is his name, "Mr. John Tiffen, Shasta, California" in old period dip pen script. Shasta is in Shasta County. John is shown at his bench with a ball peen type hammer, horseshoes, a pork pie hat, wearing his sunday's best outfit, including a fancy black velvet polka dot vest in early fabrics. Early pioneer California photography is scarce, and this is a wonderful image, with an added handwritten California Tiffen family genealogy clue. The CDV will be sent in a rigid sleeve. A wonderful original one-of-a-kind piece of early American history.
