1864-66 Civil War era Outdoor CDV Photograph of the Common School, Lexington, Mass
Outdoor CDV photography is rare in itself, and this one is a beautiful early architectural scene of the Common School in Lexington, Massachusetts, which is in Middlesex County. It has a 2 cent blue revenue stamp on the back, denoting the Civil War era. The scene is of about 100 children outside this big and beautiful school in the summer. The tone is beautiful and it's wonderful under magnification. There are even young girls in the school building window, which must have been quite an event to anticipate a traveling photographer coming to visit in his horse and buggy for this shot. NOTE: In 1864-66 the US government taxed photography to help pay for the American Civil war. Revenue stamps were placed on the back of photos, and "cancelled" by the photographer. CDV's with revenue stamps are collectible in their own right for stamp collectors and vintage photography collectors. It is a wonderful way to date a Civil War era photograph. This CDV has a revenue stamp. Comes shipped in a clear hard rigid sleeve. Beautiful, one of a kind, and rare! See More -->
